A few months ago I wrote a post entitled 13 SEO Terms Every Small Business Owner Should Know. In plugging along on my own SEO work, I came up with a list of SEO terms that are a bit more advanced but still well worth knowing when trying to get your site to the number 1 spot in the Search Engine Results Page.
Here are 9 more SEO terms every small business owner should know.
Keyword Density: A measure of the frequency of your keyword in relation to the total word count of the page. So if your page has 200 words, and your keyword phrase appears 10 times, its density is 5%.
Analytics: A program that helps you to gather and analyze data about your website. The most popular (and free) program is Google Analytics.
Content Management System (CMS): Programs such as WordPress which allows the layperson to create content in a site without having much knowledge of coding skills.
Call to Action: When a visitor follows through with the goal of your site such as buying a product online, filling out a form, registering for a newsletter, etc.
Conversion Ratio: The number of visitors to your site who complete your call to action. Divide total visitors by number of visitors who make a purchase, and you’ve got your conversion ratio.
Sandbox: Google is believed to have a second index called the sandbox (or the supplemental index). Not every new page appears in the main index straight away. Some of them are put into the sandbox until Google decides that they are worthy of appearing in the main index – the one you see whenever you do a standard search on Google. Websites that are placed in the sandbox don’t appear for normal searches. This means that being in the sandbox is the worst that can happen to your site.
Reciprocal Link: A mutual agreement between two webmasters to exchange links (i.e. they both add a link to the other’s website on their own website). While it can be beneficial to have reciprocal links with others in your niche, most search engines don’t view reciprocal linking with unrelated sites it very favorably because it is seen as a manufactured method of generating links.
301 Redirect: A search engine friendly way of moving your website to preserve your SERP rankings. If you have to move your site or change your file names, a 301 redirect tells the search engine that you have permanently moved so that it knows how to route user searches to continue to locate you.
Rich Snippets: Rich Snippets provide a small sample of a site’s content on Search Engine Result Pages. They enhance your search listing, making it more enticing for users to click on and easier for search engines to extract information. Adding Rich Snippets to your site won’t affect the appearance or content of your pages. Everything is done behind the scenes in your site’s HTML code.
