I’ve seen quite a few articles lately about burnout, productivity and trying to do it all.
While each article and post has a slightly different angle, I think that their main point is the same.
How to stay focused on your goals while not loosing yourself in the process. As a solopreneur, there is much I do on my own, in my little office, with no one around.
I write, I engage, I connect and I post and with the exception of the occasional hang out and face-to-face meeting, I’m alone a great deal of the day. It’s easy to get caught up in the “have-to-do’s” and ignore the “want-to-do’s” of my business.
So how, as a solopreneur, can I stay focused on my goals and still get what I need to do done, while being able to do what I want to do, namely the things that started me on this business path in the first place.Stay True To Your GoalsIn businesses, both large and small, there should always be clear goals and objectives. As a solopreneur, this is not different, in fact, it’s more important than ever to have a clear set of goals and objectives.
Taking the time to revisit what your goals are and what they will look like when accomplished is crucial when working on your own.
Here are some ways that a small business owner or solopreneur can stay focused on their goals.
Concentrate on 1-2 goals at a time: Most solopreneurs have a very long list of goals they want to accomplish. Such a long list can lead to discouragement and lack of motivation. By concentrating on one or two goals at a time, you are more likely to get what you need to do done in a methodological and organized way.
Prioritize: We waste so much time on activities that don’t really help us grow our businesses. You can minimize this wasted time by prioritizing your to-do list. Before writing down a to-do list, take a look at your top goals.
Try to include at least one to-do item for each goal. For instance, if a goal is to grow your newsletter list to 10,000 subscribers over the next year, you want to continue to give people a reason to sign up for your newsletter, like a free e-book or webinar that you get access to by signing up.
Create a plan: If you can lay out a step-by-step plan, it’s much easier to stay focused on your goals and accomplish them. Try creating a daily plan on what you hope to achieve that day and stick to it, keeping a positive momentum.
Create Milestones: Setting one huge goal can be daunting and a bit discouraging. By trying to break your long-term goal up into several smaller, easily achievable goals, you can work, complete, regroup and keep going.
Find a Goal Buddy: Working on your own can be very isolating. Take the time to connect with one or two individuals with similar goals and keep each other motivated. They can also help keep you on track, provide encouragement and just plan company (either online or offline) when you need it.
Know your work habits: Some people can work long stretches at a time without a break, others need to regenerate after an hour or so. Learning to accept and honor they way you work is an important step in getting what you need to do done. If you need a break every hour to stay focused, then do it and don’t feel guilt about it.
Track your goals: If you’ve set a goal that you want to reach by the end of the year, I would suggest taking 20 minutes at the end of every week to note what you did to work towards that goal during that week and how much closer you are to reaching it. This will help you stay on track and focused.
Give yourself a reward: Every time you accomplish one of your goals, spend some time doing something you love to do, like going for lunch, getting a manicure or going to a movie. We all need a reward for doing a good job.
Learn to say no: If you’re in the habit of putting your goals aside for other people, it’s time to learn how to say no. By not saying no, you are doing yourself, and your business a disservice and moving farther and farther away from your goals. Remember that you are important enough to put first. It’s healthy, smart and important to do so. By learning how to say no, you may find a bigger pot of gold at the end of your rainbow.
Take time off to be social: In order to stay focused on your goals, it’s critical to know when to turn it all off and spend time with your friends and family and relax. Being a solopreneur is often a lonely job. A people, we are social by nature and sometimes we just need to turn it off and let it all hang loose.
